What is an electronic medical record (EMR)?

An EMR is a digital version of a patient’s paper chart that can be shared by participating doctors, hospitals, and patients. The Epic EMR is a computer system that stores your information in a secure database. Results and notes from a visit to the hospital, physician’s office, or outpatient facility are consolidated in one place. That means if you move or are traveling, participating providers can quickly access your medical history, allergies, medications, and test results to deliver the best care possible.

How is my privacy protected? Who can access my record?

Your medical information is protected under federal law. Only approved healthcare providers involved in your care can view your record. The EMR is locked until an approved caregiver logs in to the database to access the record. When the caregiver is done, he logs out. For additional safety, the system automatically logs out a caregiver who is not actively using it.
